From the Vice-Chancellor
I was recently in Europe with Professor Geraldine Mackenzie,
Pro Vice Chancellor – Research and Dean of Law, and Brett Walker, General Manager-
Strategic Partnerships, with the purpose of meeting with our existing and proposed
new partner institutions and alumni in Frankfurt and Paris.
For the first time, we held a graduation ceremony in Paris for our French Bar School
Master of Laws (International Legal Practice) degree program graduates. It was an
excellent function with our graduates, their families and friends, representatives
of the French Bar School, the Australian Government and other distinguished guests
in attendance.
We also held discussions with our key French agent, AustralieMag, to explore other
exchange and double degree opportunities in France.
An important part of the unique Bond student experience is to offer study abroad
and international exchange opportunities. To this end, agreements were renewed with
the European Business School and Phillips Marburg University, and we visited our
new partner the Freie University of Berlin for the first time. Promising discussions
were also held with two other prestigious German institutions to explore a number
of opportunities. A meeting with the Australian Embassy in Berlin also provided
useful introductions to the Germany Exchange Department, with the opportunity for
us to explore how Bond can support the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the
birth of Ludwig Leichhardt, who died during one of his Australian expeditions in
1848.
Congratulations to Bond Law alumnus Dr Ross Buckley, who has received a highly sort
after 2011 Fulbright Senior Scholarship to undertake a three-month project in international
law at the renowned Duke University, one of our partner institutions, in the United
States. Dr Buckley completed his Master of Laws at Bond in 1994 and has since gone
on to distinguish himself in the legal finance arena as an academic and researcher
of note. The focus of his project will be to identify the fundamental financial
reforms required to stave off a repeat of the Global Financial Crisis.
Finally, I am delighted to announce the 2012 domestic scholarship season has opened.
The scholarship program attracts more than 300 of Australia's brightest and most
promising school leavers who show potential of being tomorrow's leaders. Applications
can be made through the website.
Regards,
Professor Robert Stable
Vice-Chancellor and President

Learning goes
mobile at Bond
Bond University
is leading the mobile learning revolution by developing and testing iPad applications
for use in the classroom. Academics and researchers in several faculties and schools
at Bond are currently engaged in two major m-Learning projects, one of which involves
the development of an anatomically correct electronic 'heart' app.
"The e-heart has been designed for medical students as an enhancement to the theoretical
textbook aspect of their studies," said project leader and Assistant Professor of
Clinical Anatomy, Dr Allan Stirling.
"Using this application on a smart phone or tablet computer, they will be able to
manipulate and explore the human heart in 3D, viewing front and back, inside and
outside to gain a depth and perspective that they could never achieve by looking
at the two-dimensional photographs and drawings contained in a traditional paper
textbook."
A second m-Learning focussed project being conducted by Bond Communications and
Media specialist, Dr Jeff Brand extends the mobile technology testing across a broader
platform of university studies.
The focus of Dr Brand's research is to quantify the difference in learning outcomes
achieved by using e-textbooks as compared to traditional texts.
"We are circulating ten iPads to students in our Digital Media and Society class
and giving them access to an e-textbook that has been specifically prepared for
this research project by Oxford University Press," said Dr Brand.
"The students use the iPads for one week and they are then rotated to another group
so that we will eventually get feedback from everyone in the class."
Dr Brand's 'pad-agogy' study is being conducted over two semesters and will ultimately
involve 150 students with the results compiled for publication later this year.

Double International
Win for Bond University
Bond University
recently won two of the top global mooting competitions, the Willem C. Vis (East)
International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong and the International Criminal
Court Trial Competition in The Hague, Netherlands.
With more than 10 international and national mooting opportunities available throughout
the year, Bond University prepares students for the real life court room. Dean of
the Faculty of Law, Professor Geraldine Mackenzie, says the benefits for students
taking part in mooting competitions during their university studies stretch beyond
the trophies and accolades on offer.
"Put simply, mooting gives students the opportunity to argue a specific fictitious
case in front of a Judge or Judges against opposing Counsel," said Professor Mackenzie.
"Generally speaking, each mooting competition focuses on a specific area of law,
so students have to come to grips with a specialised area of the law such as family
law, international law, criminal law, intellectual property law and so on, to a
level of detail that they would not necessarily attain in their normal classes."
Bond University Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Stable congratulated the students
on their outstanding performances in both competitions.
"Mooting is a wonderful opportunity for students with an interest in certain areas
of law to work with like-minded peers and network with global contacts in the legal
industry."
"For Bond University to take out two top international legal competitions in one
week is an incredible feat. Arguably, Bond University is now the best advocacy-teaching
university in the world with such an outstanding record," said Professor Stable.
Bond University has won four international (including a win at the ICC Trial Competition
in 2009) and three Australian mooting competitions in the past three years. For
