Synopsis

This course introduces the technical foundation of the Internet and basic Internet technologies atop of TCP/IP, such as email services and the HTTP protocol. The practical part of the subject also introduces the tools and techniques for interactive WorldWide Web application design and construction. Primary focus of the course is to provide a basic understanding of internet related technologies and introductory skills in web application design. The course does not cover graphical design issues (see Multimedia I and Web Site Development).

Prior Knowledge

Students should have passed CORE11-11O Information Technology 1 before taking this subject, or have the equivalent knowledge

Learning Objectives

Students will be expected to:
- understand the functionality behind the Internet, core components as well as most common application protocols
- be able to diagnose various network status characteristics
- be able to simulate common application protocols using telnet
- be able to examine and diagnose common internet application protocols using low-level diagnostic tools
- be able to produce standards-compliant web sites
