Synopsis

The subject Physiological Principles of Rehabilitation will provide understanding of the physiological principles that underpin rehabilitation of selected vascular, metabolic and neurological conditions and how detailed understanding of those physiological principles and mechanisms may improve clinical outcomes. Attention will be given to selected clinical conditions where repeated doses of exercise may be an effective rehabilitation strategy. The biological bases for rehabilitation interventions will be examined using an evidence-based approach and the outcome statistics from rehabilitation interventions for specific clinical conditions will be considered and contrasted. Clinical conditions to be examined include Ageing, Inactivity, Obesity, Diabetes, Dementia and Hypertension. Attention will also be given to emerging rehabilitation interventions such as heart failure and chronic renal failure.
