Sustainable tourism planning and development provides students with the theoretical knowledge of tourism planning tools and illustrates their practical application. Tourism planning is highly complex and requires integrated and flexible approaches. The concept of sustainability and sustainable development are introduced and provide the underpinning philosophy in this course. The focus in this subject lies on encouraging students to critically reflect on the nature of tourism planning, the context in which it takes place and its sustainability. It will further prepare students to appreciate and incorporate emerging challenges including the impacts of climate change into future planning efforts.
