University Subject Timetable
Synopsis
This subject will be taken by students early in their program of study and will provide them with the basic skills in scientific reasoning and research methodologies. Students will learn how the scientific method arose, and how to apply it in designing experiments; how to ask scientific questions and evaluate evidence and how to find and evaluate information using library databases and the scientific literature. Students will also learn to keep a valid laboratory notebook and how to accurately write up an experiment, including basic statistical analysis of data.

Learning Objectives
1. Describe the basic scientific process and concepts of scientific logic and reasoning
2. Locate, retrieve, interpret, critically evaluate and reflect on scientific information from a variety of sources including textbooks, journal articles, public media and websites
3. Apply scientific information to formulate and define relevant research questions and hypotheses; design simple experimental strategies to test hypotheses
4. Reflect on the major principles of ethical conduct of animal & human experiments
5. Manage and integrate information and data generated from experiments and synthesise reports for peers; use basic statistical methods to analyse data
6. Prepare and present examples of scientific writing using IMRAD format; work competently in a group and share ideas and information
